56+54+44 = Maha mess: While we add up political numbers is anyone adding up the economy numbers? 😜

If you add 56 of Shiv Sena with 54 of NCP and 44 of Congress, what magic figure do you get? You get a Maha mess, leading to a Mahabharat-style power tussle in Maharashtra where tall leaders have Maha egos. Former CM Devendra Fadnavis was once projected as the new grand Peshwa. But now the original Maratha satrap, Sharad Pawar, is seeking to overturn the power balance. In the land of the proud Marathas, politics is bound to be a clash of titans although at the moment democracy in the state is sinking faster than the Titanic.

After the election results, Shiv Sena thought it would roar again and was feeling high. But now it has been left high and dry. Prospective allies are dragging their feet and Sena is hoping its own flock doesn’t vote with its feet. Since the endangered Sena tiger has signalled that it cannot coexist with the ascendant Gujarat lion, hunting season has just started in the political jungle. Mandir wahin banega, recently ruled the Supreme Court. But mukhya mantri kaun banega is a question that even Lord Ram may not be able to answer. Shiv Sena claims to be the original party of the Ram Mandir with Sena supremo Bal Thackeray once boasting “our boys did it” after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. However Sena’s boys have now also demolished the age old Hindutva alliance. Then it was Hindu pride, now it’s Maharashtrian asmita.

Sharad Pawar is keeping everyone guessing. After campaigning in the rain, he’s now clouding the picture. Like a good CEO his is an open door policy and he takes care never to close any options, even as the doors of 10 Janpath, Sonia Gandhi’s residence, remain tightly shut. The ever inscrutable Congress which is playing a game of now-we’re-in and now-we’re-out as far as government formation is concerned has shown that the party of the freedom struggle is struggling for freedom from the High Command.

Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari clamped President’s rule with a speed that would put legendary marathon runner Pheidippides to shame. In the process he sent out a firm message: raj karega Raj Bhavan. For newly elected legislators, all roads are now leading to resorts. Maybe resort owners should be invited to form governments since they have the maximum number of MLAs on their side. Helpless voters ask: while we add political numbers, is anyone adding up the dismal economy numbers?
